Position Overview
The University of Kansas School of Music seeks to fill a full-time, academic year (nine month) faculty position to teach undergraduate and graduate music education (elementary/general) beginning on August 18, 2025. The University of Kansas School of Music is a comprehensive university music school offering professional training in a wide array of specializations through baccalaureate, masters, and doctoral degree programs. A charter member of the National Association of Schools of Music (1928), KU is the only institution authorized by the Kansas Board of Regents to grant doctoral degrees in music.

This appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor (tenure-track). The successful candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate music education courses, typically five courses over two semesters. Expectations include undergraduate courses in music education and elementary/general music education, graduate courses in elementary/general music and other areas of specialization and advising theses and dissertations. The successful candidate will conduct research in their major field of study.

Job Description
Teaching 40%
  • Teach undergraduate and graduate music education courses, typically five courses over two semesters, including undergraduate courses in music education and elementary/general music education and graduate courses in elementary/general music and other areas of specialization.
  • Advise theses and dissertations.
Research/Creative Work 40%
  • Conduct research and maintain a line of research publications.
Service 20%
  • Participate in committee work and other contributions of service to the School of Music, University of Kansas and/or professional organizations.
  • Build and maintain a productive relationship with school music programs and music education organizations.
Required Qualifications
  1. Doctorate of music education or closely related field required by start of appointment.
  2. Three years of successful experience in teaching elementary/general music in K-12 or college/university setting.
  3. Demonstrated interpersonal skills with a commitment to collegiality.
