The position is at the rank of Associate or Full professor; however, senior Assistant Professors with an exceptional record of excellence will also be considered. The position will focus on the area of Hardware Cybersecurity .

Department of Computer Engineering

The Department of Computer Engineering is part of the newly established College of Artificial Intelligence, Cyber, and Computing. Launched with an inaugural cohort of eight tenure and tenure-track faculty members, the department is poised for substantial growth. It offers an ABET-accredited Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering, alongside Master of Science programs in Computer Engineering and Artificial Intelligence, and a Ph.D. in Computer Engineering.

Currently serving over 400 students, the department anticipates continued enrollment growth in the coming years. Faculty members are recipients of prestigious awards such as the NSF CAREER and AFOSR Young Investigator Program (YIP), and several lead major UT San Antonio research centers and institutes.

Research within the department spans a broad spectrum of cutting-edge areas, including computer architecture, cybersecurity, neuromorphic computing, low-power VLSI design, machine learning, quantum engineering, and AI/ML hardware, with robust support from federal and industry sponsors.

The department maintains strong collaborations with prominent university and college research centers and hubs, including UT San Antonio's National Security Collaboration Center , Center of Data Science , the Cyber Manufacturing Innovation Institute , the Institute for Cyber Security , the Center for Infrastructure Assurance and Security , the MATRIX AI Consortium , and the Open Cloud Institute . Faculty have access to state-of-the-art research laboratory resources and high-performance computing resources.

Position Summary

The selected candidates will lead and conduct cybersecurity research, mentor early-career faculty, grow research programs, and foster interdisciplinary collaboration across CAICC departments. This appointment in the Department of Computer Engineering, with potential for joint appointments in other CAICC departments. Candidates appointed at the rank of Full Professor will designated as University of Texas System (UT System) Research Excellence Regents' Professors.

The Regents' Research Excellence Program (RREP) was established by the UT System to accelerate research excellence across its four Emerging Research Universities (ERUs), including UT San Antonio. Through this initiative, UT System has committed significant funding to recruit mid- to senior-level, research-active faculty to dramatically grow its national research prominence and federal funding opportunities.

UT San Antonio's allocation from the UT System supports approximately 40 new faculty positions over the next several years. These positions are intended to attract accomplished scholars whose expertise will strengthen the university's research enterprise, address pressing societal challenges, and advance institutional goals aligned with UT System and Texas Legislature priorities.

Through RREP, UT San Antonio seeks to recruit outstanding faculty from varied backgrounds and disciplines who will contribute to the university's mission and help shape its future as a premier public research institution.

Required Qualifications

  • A doctorate degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Information Systems, Cybersecurity, or related areas (e.g., Information Science, Data Science, and Electrical Engineering), with specialization in cybersecurity.
  • Appropriate research and teaching record for appointment at the rank for each position (for those seeking appointments with tenure, this is contingent upon Board of Regents' approval).

  • Must demonstrate their ability to work with and be sensitive to the educational needs of urban populations and support the University's commitment as a model for student success.
  • The successful candidate is expected to demonstrate a record of leadership in high-quality, collaborative research and an excellent scholarship record of external funding.
  • This position requires the ability to maintain the security and integrity of UT San Antonio and its infrastructure.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Applicants who have demonstrated research excellence in Hardware Cybersecurity are particularly encouraged to apply.
  • Candidates must demonstrate a strong publication record and/or the knowledge and experience in seeking and securing external research funding.
  • The ability to obtain and conduct federally funded research that requires a top-secret security clearance is also preferred.
