This exciting position oversees a group of talented scientists in the Big Game Conservation Unit of the Wildlife Branch. The Unit is responsible for conservation and management of deer, elk, bear, pronghorn, wild pig and bighorn sheep. The position is responsible for coordinating with regions on statewide species management and monitoring plans and provides input and leadership in regional initiatives. The position oversees grant development within the unit and provides guidance for regional grant development and completion. These grants are the primary funding for positions within the unit. The position also includes overseeing survey design and modeling work for estimating and monitoring population sizes statewide for all big game species, assessing the effects of climate change, fire, drought, and other stressors, and using all of this information to make recommendations about hunting regulations and conservation measures. It also includes working with teams of other Department leaders and scientists, Tribes and diverse groups of stakeholders, to build collaborative working relationships and develop science-based approaches to resource assessment, conservation, and management of big game species and their habitats. Additionally, the position closely collaborates with the Connectivity supervisor on understanding where habitat connectivity affects big game and with the supervisor for the Science Support Unit to design and implement innovative scientific protocols and modeling approaches.This position offers the possibility of an office-centered telework agreement based on the Department's current Telework Policy.

Should be able to work long hours in the office using a personal computer and keyboard at least several hours a day, sitting most of the time but may involve standing or sitting for brief periods. Field work may be done in uneven terrain and involve hiking for extended periods and carrying a 30 pound backpack. Aerial surveys from a small fixed wing aircraft or helicopter will be done occasionally. Possession of a valid driver’s license. Must be able to safely operate a motor vehicle and equipment and be prepared to travel moderately using a State vehicle.Demonstrated ability to act independently to resolve technical issues; ability to develop schedules and complete tasks accordingly; meet reporting requirements and deadlines. Ability to direct and conduct biological resource work in the field; travel throughout the state; and work at odd hours. Ability to develop and make effective oral presentations before the public.

Possession of a PhD or Master's degree in wildlife ecology, wildlife management and conservation, or a closely related field.
