Job Description

General Purpose: Following blueprints or other specifications, a carpenter builds, assembles, installs and repairs fixtures and structures that are made of wood. A carpenter may also work with other materials such as plastic, fiberglass or drywall. Carpenters construct and repair building frameworks and structures—such as stairways, doorframes, partitions, and rafters—made from wood and other materials. They also may install kitchen cabinets, siding, and drywall. Carpenters perform formwork carpentry and sets forms for concrete structures, footings and bridges using hand tools and power. Position and place rebar in concrete forms to reinforce concrete.

Work Schedule: Days and hours vary depending on the assigned project.

Responsibilities & Duties

  • Promote and comply with all Company and safety policies and procedures
  • Measure and mark cutting lines on materials, using ruler, pencil, chalk, and marking gauge.
  • Follow established safety rules and regulations and maintain a safe and clean environment.
  • Verify trueness of structure, using plumb bob and level.
  • Shape or cut materials to specified measurements, using hand tools, machines, or power saw.
  • Study specifications in blueprints, sketches or building plans to prepare project layout and determine dimensions and materials required.
  • Assemble and fasten materials to make framework or props, using hand tools and wood screws, nails, dowel pins, or glue.
  • Build or repair cabinets, doors, frameworks, floors, and other wooden fixtures used in buildings, using woodworking machines, carpenter's hand tools, and power tools.
  • Erect scaffolding and ladders for assembling structures above ground level.
  • Remove damaged or defective parts or sections of structures and repair or replace, using hand tools.
  • Install structures and fixtures, such as windows, frames, floorings, and trim, or hardware, using carpenter's hand and power tools.
  • Maintain records, document actions and present written progress reports.
  • Finish surfaces of woodwork or wallboard in houses and buildings, using paint, hand tools, and paneling.
  • Inspect ceiling or floor tile, wall coverings, siding, glass, or woodwork to detect broken or damaged structures.
  • Construct forms and chutes for pouring concrete.
  • Layout and installation of reinforcing bar.
  • Fill cracks and other defects in plaster or plasterboard and sand patch, using patching plaster, trowel, and sanding tool.
  • Perform minor plumbing, welding or concrete mixing work.
  • Apply shock-absorbing, sound-deadening, and decorative paneling to ceilings and walls.
  • Maintain a professional appearance
  • Other duties as assigned by Foreman or Superintendent

Required Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent GED.

Required Experience

  • Minimum of three months past experience working as a carpenter.

Required Skills/Licenses/Certifications

  • Valid driver’s license to operate motor vehicles.
  • Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals
  • Add and subtract two digit numbers and multiply and divide with 10’s and 100’s, ability to perform these operations using unit weight measurements and volumes.
  • Apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form
  • Workers should be able to work within precise standards of accuracy and follow set procedures and standards

  • May require working at various heights, up to 100-feet, from ladders, scaffolds, aerial lifts, catwalks, or other safe work areas.
