Job Description and Duties

The Department Fish and Wildlife's Northern Region Inland Fisheries and Wild Trout unit has an opening for six Fish and Wildlife Scientific Aids. The incumbents will assist a team of scientists working to survey and conduct restoration activities within the Trinity Alps Wilderness, Russian Wilderness, Marble Mountain Wilderness and other areas throughout the region. This project seeks to conduct range-wide visual encounter surveys for fish, amphibians, reptiles, and other aquatic species in high-elevation lakes and wetlands to inform the Department's backcountry fisheries management and monitoring of at-risk amphibians activities.

We are seeking six highly motivated individuals to join our team in a position that provides development of expertise in fisheries and herpetology science and management, survey and study design, designing, implementing, and monitoring habitat restoration projects, data analysis, scientific writing, California Endangered Species Act (CESA) and other environmental laws and regulations. This position will require a significant commitment to backcountry work, hiking, camping, and operating 4-wheel drive vehicles in remote high mountain environments. Overnight travel will be required.

The Fish and Wildlife Scientific Aid classification is a non-testing classification.

Working Conditions

Office and field related activities. Field activities include working in inclement weather; physical capability and endurance to conduct fieldwork in remote backcountry/wilderness areas accessible only by hiking; ability to navigate uneven off-trail terrain; multiple day trips (up to 8 days) require campground and backpack camping. Extensive activities associated with streams, lakes, and other wetland habitats. Ability to lift and carry a 40 lb. backpack for an extended period up to 8 days in wilderness and backcountry terrain. Wear a prescribed uniform when engaging with the public, conducting field work, and during site visits. Possess a valid Driver’s License; ability to operate vehicles including 4-wheel drive vehicles on dirt roads, in rough terrain and all-terrain vehicle operation. Travel is required. 

Special Requirements

Special Physical Characteristics: Physical strength and agility; ability to swim 50 yards and stay afloat at least five minutes; ability to lift 40 pounds; ability to distinguish colors in the red-green color spectrum.

Good driving record; additional course work or experience in biological or chemical sciences; interest in and knowledge of fishing, hunting or studying fish, wildlife, invertebrates or plants; experience in camping, boating, and maintaining or repairing equipment; interest in a career in biology or fish wildlife.
