Job Description

Oakwood Elementary School seeks to fill a Part Time Spanish language teaching position for grades K-2.  The Spanish teacher works with elementary school students to develop the necessary skills for language acquisition and provides rich instructional experiences as a foundation for introducing the Spanish language and an appreciation for the culture of Spanish-speaking countries.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Employs effective, developmentally appropriate teaching strategies for young second-language learners, including Total Physical Response (TPR), games, songs, and literature.
• Lessons include the use of visual, auditory, and kinesthetic modalities.
• Exposes students to real-world language use through role-playing and the use of multimedia.
• Collaborates with the classroom teacher to integrate Spanish language learning with existing curriculum, where possible.
• Engages and encourages students in the active process of learning.
• Provides ongoing student feedback, both informal and formal, including written narrative evaluations.
• Meets with students and families as needed.
• Actively engages in the life of the school.
• Responds to evaluations from supervisors and students professionally and constructively.
• Integrates culturally responsive teaching practices into the classroom and is committed to professional growth on equity and inclusion.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the essential functions of this job, the incumbent must be able to do the following: stand for extended periods; sit for extended periods; bend and reach for filing and other job-related functions; climb up and down stairs; bend, stoop, and lift to move and retrieve materials; pull, push, and lift; reach both above and below shoulder height.  Specific visual abilities include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.  Must be able to visually inspect work.  Manual dexterity to operate computer and other office equipment required.

• B.A. in Spanish, or in the teaching of Spanish, with native or near-native proficiency (Master’s Degree preferred)
• Minimum of 3 years experience teaching in an elementary school setting preferred
• Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills with the ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with all constituents. 
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required.
• Possess proficient technology skills
• Working knowledge of the ACTFL proficiency standards and currently teaching the three modes of communication
• Committed to academic excellence, interdisciplinary learning, exceptional teaching
• Demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional development in both subject matter and methodology
