St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School, West Islip, NY, a Catholic, co-educational secondary school in the Diocese of Rockville Centre, is seeking a Leave Replacement Theology Teacher (five months, possibly to lead into full-time) to work Monday through Friday work week with occasional weekends and evenings as dictated by the school calendar. The Theology Teacher will report directly to the high school principal. The Theology Teacher: Is a prayerful and practicing Roman Catholic committed to the mission of the education, evangelization and catechesis of high school students. Understands the proper relationship between Faith and Reason, and understands the importance of Catholic Apologetics in the mission of education. Has a charism and developed talents for communicating in a compelling way the teachings of the Catholic Church in a way that inspires, motivates, and leads high school students to deeper conversion and conformity to Christ and His Church Works collaboratively with the Department Chair, Chaplain, Campus Minister, and Administrative Team to promote the truths, beauty, and goodness of the Gospel and the Catholic faith. Lives an exemplary life of holiness and serves as a role model for students, families, and school personnel. Is publicly and privately faithful to the teachings of the Catholic Church as contained in the Catechism of the Catholic Church and the Code of Canon Law as interpreted by the Diocesan Bishop. Duties and Responsibilities: Teaches theology classes to high school students Prepares daily lessons and instruction of assigned classes in accordance with school and diocesan curriculum Classroom management and discipline of all assigned classes of students Diagnosis and evaluation of students' mastery of learning or lack thereof Prepares remedial lessons where necessary Reports student progress to parents as needed and during school-scheduled conferences, meeting with parents upon their request Attends and participates at meetings pertaining to the professional planning and evaluation of school program Additional supervision & duties during the school day Qualifications: A Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Catholic Theology or Catechetics is preferred. An ability to articulate the truths of the Catholic Faith in a precise yet accessible way to high school students An understanding of the Kerygma, Sacred Scripture, the principles of Catholic Social Teachings A capacity for communicating well with high school students, parents, and colleagues. Salary $48,000 - $83,000 depending on experience, qualifications and education.
