Position overview: The Tool & Die Maker serves a key function in the operation and on-going maintenance of the high-speed manufacturing equipment that produces aluminum cans at the Sugar Land, Texas manufacturing location. Reports directly to the PM&R Supervisor. Duties And Responsibilities: Reporting directly to the PM&R Supervisor, the Tool & Die Maker's responsibilities would include, but not be limited to, the following: Reporting directly to manufacturing floor supervision and management, the Tool & Die Maker responsibilities would include, but not be limited to, the following:
  • Must be qualified and proficient operating manual machine shop equipment (grinder, lathe, mill, etc.) to make replacement parts for production equipment.
  • Qualified individuals will be required to demonstrate skills in manual machines, lathes, mill machines, use of turn tables, drill presses, surface grinder and other machines.
  • Must be able to demonstrate skills in reading both part drawings, assembly drawings and have strong trouble shooting skills is a plus, machine parts as needed such as shifts, bushings, brackets, etc.
  • Must be able to interpret blueprints of machine assemblies. Repair and rebuild clutches, stamping presses, Dexter feeders, conveyors, turrets, etc.
  • Must be able to layout material and fabricate equipment guards, rails chutes, et. Knowledge of metals, threads and fits.
  • Must be able to perform preventive maintenance on the production equipment.
  • Must be able to safely secure and move equipment using forklifts.
  • Must have high value and display a sense of urgency to complete projects and tasks with minimal guidance.
  • Must be able to work various shifts, weekends and holidays as needed. Other duties will be assigned as needed.
  • Perform work requiring a thorough knowledge of machine shop and tool room practices and techniques, properties of various materials, and the principles of application and operations of various types of tools, jigs, fixture and dies.
  • Make repairs or alterations to end and tongue dies including the manufacture of replacement parts as needed.
  • Use precision measuring instruments to assemble, fit, align and adjust parts to very exact tolerances.
  • Manage tooling inventories, setup tool packs, measure precision tolerances and work with assembly set-ups.
  • Study specifications such as blueprints, sketches, models, or descriptions to determine materials required and machines to be used to fabricate parts.
  • Set-up and operation of machine tools such as lathes, milling machines and other equipment to machine parts.
  • Interact closely with the operations team to plan, trouble shoot and analyze production and equipment issues and concerns and come up with solutions.
  • Run quality checks on product in line with customer requirements.
  • Performs other job-related duties as required or assigned.
In addition to the specific responsibilities listed above, the ideal candidate will possess the following: Minimum Requirements:
  • Candidate must have Five (5) plus years of experience as a Tool & Die Maker/Maintenance Machinist
  • Must be qualified and proficient operating manual machine shop equipment
  • Thorough knowledge of working with ferrous, non-ferrous, and non-metallic materials, cutting oils, grinding compounds and other processing materials
  • Proven competency in the use of micrometers, calipers, and related equipment
  • Must be available to work various shifts if needed and be able to work nights, weekends, and overtime.
Preferred Requirements:
  • High School Education/GED or equivalent
  • Associate degree or a vocational or technical certification or a journeyman's card or license
  • High-speed packaging industry experience
  • Knowledge of Six Sigma, SPC, and Lean Manufacturing
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Proven math and computer skills and working knowledge of various Microsoft programs (Excel, Word, Access, etc.)
Physical Requirements:
  • While performing the duties of this job, the associate is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, use hands, reach with hands and arms, and may be required to balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl
  • The associate may lift and/or move up to 50 pounds on occasion.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision and ability to adjust focus
  • The employee must be able to work up to twelve (12) hours shifts, both day and evening
  • Employees will be required to have their own tools.
Working Conditions:
  • The majority of work will be in a plant environment but maybe required to move around to different parts of the manufacturing floor.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the associate will be exposed to moving mechanical parts and vehicular traffic in the plant.
  • The associate may be exposed to a wide range of temperatures.
  • The noise level is frequently loud.
